Kanas App Design

A collection of mockups and design documents to gamify energy usage.

Overview

For this project, we were tasked with designing an app for Kanas for their new apartment complex to potentially gamify the users energy usage. Our initial ideas ranged from collecting stickers for earning achievements to a full blown grow your own environment with place able animals.

The sticker system was the simplest system of all. Here the users would collect and earn stickers for completing tasks based on their family size. For example, if they were in the bottom 10 percent of water usage on their floor, they'd earn a sticker for it. Each sticker would display what percentage of the building owns the sticker to provide a sense of accomplishment when challenges are met.

The other option we proposed was that every player was given a single plant to take care of. If they used too much water or energy, the plant would suffer and wilt. This would give them a goal to works towards. Another variant of this was a tower that would stack higher and higher the more consecutive days the user had ideal water and energy usage.

The grow your own garden option was the most complex and engaging design of all. Every player would be given a plot of land they could customize with mountains and animals they earned through completing quests. These quests would involve keeping their energy and water usage low, etc. The player could then place their assets they earned in their garden, and zoom out to view adjacent gardens of other players to know how they were doing.
